The 31st Durban International Film Festival (22 July - 2 August 2010) is proud to announce the 3rd edition of Talent Campus Durban from 23 - 27 July 2010, an intensive 5-day programme of workshops and seminars delivered by film professionals to enhance both theoretical and practical approaches to filmmaking. The 3rd Talent Campus Durban theme Focusing on Africa: Unleashing Talent in 2010 will focus activities towards the development and strengthening of partnerships between African filmmakers.

Talent Campus Durban invites filmmakers from Africa to apply to participate in these workshops and seminars, which take place in Durban, South Africa, over five days. In addition to specific activities offered by the Campus, the selected talents will have the opportunity to attend films and events at the 31st Durban International Film Festival.

Talent Campus Durban is produced as a cooperation between the Durban International Film Festival and the Berlinale Talent Campus, and Berlin International Film Festival and is supported by the German Embassy in South Africa, the Goethe-Institut South Africa and the Department of Economic Development - KwaZulu-Natal.

(A) Qualification
Your application for the Talent Campus Durban will only be processed if you meet the following requirements:

1) You work in one of these areas: screenwriting, producing, direction, cinematography, acting, editing, sound design, film music composition, animation, art direction, production design, or video installation.
2) You have worked on at least one short film, OR you have had a film screened at a recognised film festival, OR you are a student in your final year at a film school or in a post-graduate film programme, OR you have experience in the film industry.
3) You have submitted a complete application in English, including a sample of work. Please note that the application is individual - we cannot accept team applications. You must have obtained the consent of the other copyright owners for the use of the work sample submitted.
4) You must be a citizen of an African country, currently resident somewhere in Africa and be at least 18 years of age on 23 July 2010. If not a South African citizen you must be in possession of a valid passport by 1 May 2010.

Please note the course will be conducted in English

(B) Application (consists of two parts:)
Part 1: Emailed application: First you must accept the conditions for participating in the Talent Campus Durban. Proceed to fill in the application form, to be emailed to talent@ukzn.ac.za and to talent.durban@gmail.com. A candidate number confirming receipt will be sent to you. Please email or call if you do not receive this number within 7 days.
Part 2: Submission of a sample of creative work formatted as per regulations.

Application Deadline
Deadline for receipt of your complete application is 15 March 2010. Applications and materials arriving after 15 March will not be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection of participants
Participants will be selected at the sole discretion of Talent Campus Durban. Applicants selected for participation will be informed via email by 1 May 2010. The list of selected participants will be published on our website. There is no legal claim to participate in the Talent Campus Durban.
Reimbursement of travel expenses
Travel costs, accommodation and a subsistence contribution will be offered to participants. The amount will be determined on an individual basis and at the discretion of Talent Campus Durban.

Talents Announced

The Durban International Film Festival has announced that the selection for this year's edition of Talent Campus Durban has been finalised. Over 40 young filmmakers representing nearly 20 African countries, including Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and of course South Africa, will participate in an intensive five-day programme of workshops and masterclasses. The Talents, who were selected through a rigorous application process, will also have the opportunity to attend screenings and events at the 31st Durban International Film Festival.

The 3rd Talent Campus Durban, themed Focusing on Africa: Unleashing Talent in 2010, will centre activities on the development and strengthening of partnerships between African filmmakers. Talent Campus Durban is held in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus, the eighth edition of which formed part of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in February this year. Talent Campus is a global partnership and apart from the main event in Berlin, Talent Campus partnerships take place at selected festivals in Buenos Aires, Guadalajara and Sarajevo. It is a considerable privilege and sign of success of the first two editions that DIFF has again been invited to host a Talent Campus.

Monica Rorvik, Assistant manager of the DIFF, comments: "This year's influx of Talent brings an exciting skillset to Campus, with their range of expertise covering acting, editing, directing, producing, and script writing. The Campus will facilitate opportunities to bring Africa's stories to life through the creative vision of these filmmaking talents. While we welcome the new talents with pride we also received the sad news that one of Talent Campus Durban 2009 alumni, El Hadji Samba Sarr (Senegal), died from malaria this month. Samba had also been selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus 2010 and had a project entered into the inaugural Durban FilmMart. The Durban FilmMart, which specifically targets African projects, launches at the festival and runs parallel to Talent Campus."

Another positive sign is that Durban Talent Campus alumni films appear in all sections of this year's festival, including the feature film category. Ugandan Talent Caroline Kamya will attend DIFF to present her debut feature, Imani, which also appeared at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. The festival will present two first feature length documentaries by previous participants in Talent Campus. Koundi and the National Thursday by Cameroonian Ingrid Atodji is a gorgeous and heartfelt look at life inside a communal society that is negotiating the demands of globalization and the search for uniquely African solutions. South African Carlos Franciso's American Foulbrood looks at the global environmental crisis through the crippling effects of a deadly disease on African honey bees and its possible impact on food production. Short fiction films and documentaries are also in the festival from a number of other Durban and Berlinale Film Festival Talents.
