In 1962, during a time of segregation, Tony Lip, an Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx, is hired to drive and protect Dr. Don Shirley, a world-renowned black pianist, on a concert tour. As they travel from Manhattan to the Deep South, they rely on the Green Book to find black-friendly establishments where Shirley will not be denied service or humiliated or mistreated.
In a country where the civil rights movement is beginning to make itself heard, the two men are confronted with the worst of the human soul, which they heal through their generosity and humour. Together, they must overcome their prejudices, forget what they once considered insurmountable differences, and discover their common humanity.
