Arterial Network's Cultural Policy Task Group produced the cultural policy template, Adapting the Wheel: Cultural Policies for Africa that has been translated into English, French and Arabic and is being used in the formulation and amending of cultural policies in a number of African countries. Arterial Network would like to establish a Cultural Policy Task Group on a more sustainable basis to train and nurture new culture policy practitioners, engage with cultural policy matters in a rigorous manner on an ongoing basis, assist governments in developing and implementing cultural policies and undertake research into appropriate cultural policies for the African continent.

The core group of the CPTG comprises Arterial Network members Joy Mboya (Kenya), Basma el Husseiny (Egypt), George Ngwane (Cameroon), Avril Joffe (South Africa) and Ellady Muyambi (Uganda). To supplement this core group, interested Arterial Network members are invited to apply to be appointed to the Cultural Policy Task Group (in which Steering Committee and Secretariat members will also participate). Participants will be selected on the basis of their expertise and/or potential, and the submission which they will be required to make in the form of an essay of up to five pages on one of the following topics:
1. A critique of the African Union's Plan of Action on Cultural Industries: the good, the bad and the ugly
2. A critique of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions from an African perspective
3. A critique of Arterial Network's cultural policy template: Adapting the Wheel: cultural policies for Africa, what works, what does not?

Please send an updated CV, a letter of motivation as to why you should be appointed to the Cultural Policy Task Group (what contribution you think you could make) and an essay on one of the three topics above to Nancy Onyango at nancy@arterialnetwork.org by 20 July 2012.
