Andrew "Dru" Mungai is a graduate of the American Film Institute (AFI) class of '11. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, he is now based in Los Angeles, CA.
Dru spent the first 10 years of his career working as a news and documentary cameraman, producer and editor in more than 20 countries across Africa for Reuters TV, the BBC, Aljazeera , CNN, ABC News, Discovery Channel, and other international media outlets.
Many of the stories he photographed as a cameraman have received awards such as the CNN African Journalist of the Year award ("Walk to Womanhood", a film about female circumcision) or were screened at major international film festivals ("Journey into Sunset", a documentary about children night commuters in Gulu, Uganda, which starred Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle).
Since 2009, Dru has been working as a cinematographer on independent feature films, short films, TV shows, commercials and music videos both in Los Angeles and in Africa. His short films have screened at major festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Tribeca Film Festival and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF). His second feature,"Togetherness Supreme", won Best International Film at the 2011 Santa Barbara Film Festival. Dru was recognized for his work on this film with a 2010 Kalasha Award (Kenya's highest prize) for Best Cinematography.
